McCain Democrats? Not so much

For all the talk of John McCain eating into the Democratic base, siphoning off angry Hillary Clinton supporters, the latest Rasmussen poll gives that whole meme the kabosh. John McCain secures the support of six percent of Democrats. That's right: 6.

For comparison's sake, George W. Bush earned 8 percent of the Democratic vote in 2004. And that was when Republicans outnumbered Democrats in the electorate. Now Dems far outnumber Republicans.

Before this point, many polls were showing as much as 20% of Democrats crossing the line to vote for McCain.

Now, there may be many Democrats still "unsure." But if 83% are with Obama, and 6% are with McCain, only 11% are still on the fence. The so-called "Angry Hillary Clinton Supporter Voting for McCain" is largely a figment of the media and McCain's imagination.

In fact, it's John McCain who has the base problem. Only 75 percent of Republicans are voting for McCain and as many as 15% are going for Obama.

None of this is to suggest complacency. Many supporters of Hillary Clinton are still very skeptical of Barack Obama's candidacy. Obama will need to work VERY HARD to convince these folks - most of them very loyal Democrats - that Obama's the right person. I'm confident that that will happen, but I won't assume anything. Still, the Democratic Party could not have asked for a better healing process up to this point. Hillary Clinton's historic speech last Saturday went a LONG way toward healing the party's divisions. She is a real patriot and a real Democrat. So are her supporters.

NOTE: The link from Andrew Sullivan's site went to a Washington Times article that is now not working. However, the Washington Times piece cites today's Rasmussen Poll for its finding. Sullivan's quoting is accurate.

I'm not quoting Andrew Sullivan. I'm quoting Andrew Sullivan quoting Rasmussen.

I beg to differ (none / 0)

Sulivan is actually one of the only conservative bloggers that I enjoy reading. Just because you can not think independently does not make him a hack. In fact, he is supporting the Democratic nominee this time around and he voted for Kerry in 2004. One of many Obama-Republicans. So please, before you go insulting these new additions to the Democratic party, think before you speak.

No, you in fact can not (2.00 / 1)

assume that you speak for a large majority here. For the most part Andrew Sullivan has been spot on about this primary and the GE going forward. If you want to dismiss someone's opinion just based on ideological beliefs that is your perogative. But I like to broaden my viewpoints so as to gain some objectivity. It is how we learn and evolve our positions. Besides, I am sure there are many more things you agree with him on than disagree being that he is a moderate. But go ahead and dismiss me and other points of view that are credible.

Re: No, you in fact can not (none / 0)

Since you assume so much about others and make statements based on that and then consider them facts, here is one fact you should live with:

You only support Andrew Sullivan because he supported Obama over Hillary. And your views arent credible when you talk about objectivity but make random statements based on your biased prejudiced assumptions.

Now let's get back to the main topic of how to ensure all Democrats stay with Obama.

If you read my comments (none / 0)

I made no assumptions about anyone. Just stating that I feel she is wrong about Andrew Sullivan. And no, I read him BEFORE the Democratic nomination even began. And for your information I originally supported John Edwards and was very reluctant to support Barack.

It's called reading comprehension. I do not in fact make any assumptions about anyone but only state that it is good to get out of the echo chamber of liberal blogs and mydd.com.

And as far as getting on topic, Democrats are going to need disaffected Republicans like Andrew Sullivan to have the mandate needed for things like UHC; it's called party building. If Democrats are really interested in a blow out we have to learn to respect so called "Obama-Republicans" and not throw them under the bus because of some preconceived difference.

I love how you accuse me of something then do it yourself, unless of course you meant it as snark. However, I think your analysis of me is completely off seeing how you barely know me.

Re: Sullivan: (none / 0)

I just put a significant down payment on a piece of beachfront property in a Central-American county that speaks English as a first language. It will be my retirement home no doubt, but should these so called Hillary for McCain voters rule the day this coming November, I will start construction immediately. Not only will they hand the Supreme Court to the Rethugs, they will lose many loyal progressives like me who no longer wish to be associated with the atrocities our country has committed and will continue to commit under a McBush administration, in my name. I won't stand for it, and that is why I bet my citizenship that we are better than that. A Democrat, I don't care who it is, must be elected president the next time around, or we are all doomed.

Rasmussen (none / 0)

I wish the Rasmussen site had the original comment up because people seem bothered by the Andrew Sullivan link. You have to pay for the subscription to get the information, and the Washington Times did.
